2. Strategic communications

Strategic communications:

Effective communications means being proactive, not reactive, `end-of-pipe´ and fit in at the end of a long drawn-out process.

A communication strategy first identifies the goals you wish to reach. This is followed by the target audiences to whom you will send messages – you need the audiences to achieve your goals. The strategy then identifies the appropriate delivery vehicles for sending the messages to the audiences.

Delivery vehicles, or communication outputs, fall under two main categories:

  1. Products: Something you can see or touch, like a website, report or poster.
  2. Activities: These require the active participation of people, such as a press conference, workshop, race, competition, or theatrical representation.

Examples of products are:

  • Publications, documents: reports, summaries, stories, briefings, Fact Sheets, brochures, press release, newsletter, magazine
  • Electronic: website, blog, social media
  • Multimedia: video, animation
  • TV or radio production
  • Powerpoint presentation
  • Promotional: USB stick, poster, banner, pen, T-shirt

Examples of activities are:

  • Meetings, workshops, conferences
  • Press trips and press conferences
  • Public fundraising races and clean-ups
  • Photo or artwork competition
  • Training, capacity building

Note: While all of the above outputs can be included in the development of a communication strategy, additional expertise beyond those of Earthly Communications may be needed for the implementation of some specific outputs.

Dissemination strategies: You may wish only to have a strategy which helps you identify the specific target audiences that you wish to communicate to. And how best to get messages to them. They will be the ones who need to change or act to help you reach your goals.

Specific product or activity strategy: You may have already identified the specific product or activity you will communicate through, such as a public report or a conference. We can help you maximize the communications results.
